How Many Concrete Blocks Do I Need?

1.125 blocks cover every square foot of wall when using a standard 8″ × 16″ CMU with a 3/8″ mortar joint. Divide your total wall area by 0.89 to get the block count.

Formula:  Blocks = (wall height ft × wall width ft) ÷ 0.89  |  Then add 10% waste

 Example: Wall 10 ft × 20 ft = 200 sq ft. Blocks = 200 ÷ 0.89 = 225 units. With 10% waste = 248 blocks. Mortar = 248 ÷ 33 = 8 bags. Cost at $2/block = $496 in materials.

Deduct door and window openings before calculating. A standard 3 ft × 7 ft door removes 21 sq ft. A 3 ft × 4 ft window removes 12 sq ft. Subtract all opening areas from wall area first, then divide by 0.89.

 Type S mortar (Portland cement + hydrated lime + sand, 1,800 psi) is standard for exterior and below-grade CMU walls. Type N mortar (750 psi) is used for above-grade interior walls only. Mortar joints must be exactly 3/8″ thick for structural integrity.

If you mix your own mortar, use 1 part Portland cement Type I to 3 parts masonry sand by volume. Pre-mixed Type S mortar bags are the faster option for jobs under 500 blocks — open the bag, add water, mix. For jobs over 500 blocks, bulk sand + bagged cement is more cost-effective.
