How is this calculated?

Volume depends on the shape:

  • Slab: length × width × thickness
  • Round column: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × height
  • Custom: the value you enter directly

Weight = volume × density of concrete. Normal concrete is about 2,400 kg/m³ (≈ 150 lb/ft³). Lightweight, aerated, and heavyweight mixes have different densities, which is why you can pick a type or enter your own.

Cost = volume × unit price (converted to your chosen per-unit basis). For accurate quotes, ask your local supplier for the delivered price and add 5–10% waste to your order.

Tip: Order at least 5–10% extra concrete to allow for spillage, uneven sub-grade, and slight over-pours.

How to Calculate Concrete Weight

To calculate concrete weight, follow 3 steps:

  • Measure the volume — multiply length × width × depth in matching units (feet or meters)

Concrete Weight by Type

Standard Concrete — 150 lbs/ft³ (2,400 kg/m³)

Standard concrete is the most common mix. One cubic yard weighs 4,050 lbs (1,837 kg). It uses Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water in a typical 1:2:3 ratio.

 Reinforced Concrete (RCC) — 156 lbs/ft³ (2,500 kg/m³)

Reinforced concrete (RCC) adds steel rebar to the mix. The steel increases density by roughly 4%, making one cubic yard weigh 4,214 lbs (1,912 kg). RCC is standard for foundations, columns, and structural slabs.

 Lightweight Concrete — 70–120 lbs/ft³ (1,120–1,920 kg/m³)

Lightweight concrete uses low-density aggregates — pumice, perlite, or expanded clay. One cubic yard weighs 2,160–3,240 lbs. Engineers use lightweight concrete to reduce dead load on floors and bridges.

 High-Density Concrete — 200–240 lbs/ft³ (3,200–3,840 kg/m³)

High-density concrete uses heavy aggregates like barite or iron pellets. One cubic yard exceeds 5,400 lbs. It appears in radiation shielding for nuclear plants and medical facilities — a content gap all 4 competitors miss entirely.

 Asphalt Concrete — 140 lbs/ft³ (2,243 kg/m³)

Asphalt concrete is the standard road surface material. One cubic yard weighs 3,781 lbs (1,715 kg). Asphalt produces less noise under traffic than Portland mixes, which is why roads use it over standard concrete.

Ready-Mix vs Bagged Concrete — Weight Differences

Ready-mix concrete and bagged concrete weigh the same per cubic unit — the delivery method does not change density. The practical difference is in how you order and handle the material.

 Ready-Mix Concrete

  • 8–10 cubic yards (16,200–20,250 lbs / 7,350–9,185 kg)
  • 1 cubic yard — smaller orders cost more per yard
  • 1 cubic yard — mixing by hand below this amount wastes time

 Bagged Concrete

  • 0.60 cubic feet (0.022 cubic yards)
  • 0.45 cubic feet (0.017 cubic yards)
  • 45 bags of 80 lbs or 60 bags of 60 lbs

 Use ready-mix if your project needs more than 1 cubic yard. Use bagged concrete for fence posts, small footings, and repairs under 0.5 cubic yards.
